Those visits were integral to writing Unsettled Ground: Reflections on Germany’s Attempts to Make Amends. He has written and spoken frequently about Germany’s reconciliation efforts and his connections to a new generation there. His stories about these experiences have been featured by NPR, Moment Magazine and various newspapers.

Katz is an editor, writer and digital strategist. He has extensive experience working in newspapers, magazines, radio and online journalism – having been a reporter, editor and manager.

His editing experience includes 15 years at NPR, where he was Deputy Managing Editor of digital news. He took a leading role in coordinating and developing the network’s news presence at NPR.org. The website won numerous major national awards for overall excellence during his tenure, including the Edward R. Murrow Award, Webby Award, Eppy Award, George Foster Peabody Award and National Press Foundation Award. He was also an editor at NPR’s Morning Edition and on the national desk.

Katz began his career as a newspaper reporter at The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal. He was an urban affairs reporter and editorial writer in Memphis, and the newspaper’s correspondent in Little Rock, Arkansas. He later became The Milwaukee Journal’s political reporter. He was a magazine writer, writing about state and local public policy issues for Governing, then joining Congressional Quarterly to cover social policy issues and congressional leadership. He also worked as an editor at National Geographic and WAMU 88.5.

He was a member of Leadership Greater Washington’s Signature Program Class of 2020. He received a congressional fellowship from the American Political Science Association. His byline has also appeared in The New Republic, American Journalism Review and U.S. News & World Report.
